The Peregrine Falcon is the world’s most widespread bird of prey. After the banning of DDT, populations have recovered from near extinction. With speeds of 200mph, it takes it’s prey of smaller birds mid air.

This piece was carved from tupelo wood. Many layers of acrylic wash were applied to each feather individually creating great depth and softness. He is perched on a piece of Cambrian Stone, while determining his next point of interest.

This piece is currently on display at the Wendell Gilley Museum in Southwest Harbor, Maine.

The Piping Plover is a much beloved inhabitant of sandy ocean beaches. Their coloration provides them with an extraordinary ability to move about undetected. Sadly, the Piping Plover is either threatened or endangered in all of its range in the United States. This Plover is carved from southern tupelo wood. Many thin layers of acrylic wash have been applied creating great depth of subtleties and softness in the feathers. The base and eggs are carved from one piece of white pine.

Oklahoma’s state bird is the scissor-tailed flycatcher. His tail feathers are 7 to 10 inches long. A truely handsome bird, he is acrobatic in flight, often creating "spiralling" patterns. He was carved in tupelo wood. Of coarse, he lives in Oklahoma.
